Download All Photos From a Google Drive Folder at Once (2026)

You deliver a wedding from a Google Drive folder, and a day later the couple writes back: "How do we get all of them at once?" Maybe they clicked Download and waited while Drive packed the files. Maybe they ended up with three ZIP files and weren't sure if they had everything. Maybe they opened the link on a phone and could only save photos one at a time.

None of this means you did anything wrong. Google Drive is a very good place to keep your finished work, but it was built for sharing files between colleagues, not for handing a whole shoot to a client in one tap. This guide walks through what actually happens when a client downloads a Drive folder, the three realistic ways to let them take everything at once, and a short checklist and message you can use on your next delivery.

What happens when a client downloads a Drive folder

When someone opens a shared Drive folder in a web browser and chooses Download on the folder (or selects several files and downloads them together), Drive doesn't send the files one by one. It packs them into a ZIP file first, and the client downloads that ZIP. For a handful of photos this is quick and nobody notices. For a full wedding, a few things start to show.

The wait while Drive packs the files

Before the download starts, Drive has to collect every file and build the archive. For a big folder this can take a noticeable while, and the client sees a small notice in the corner of the screen while it works. Clients who don't know what's happening often close the tab, click again, or assume it's broken. Nothing is broken; it's just slow for large sets.

Large folders arrive as several ZIP files

Google splits big downloads into several ZIP files. When it introduced the current behaviour, Google described it as compressing and downloading Drive items "into multiple 2GB zip files", named like drive-download-…zip, then drive-download-…-2.zip, and so on. A full wedding exported at high resolution can easily pass 2 GB, so your client may get two, three or more ZIPs.

That's where most of the "did I get everything?" emails come from. Each ZIP needs to finish downloading and be opened separately, and if one of them fails halfway, the client is missing a slice of the shoot without knowing which photos.

Phones are the weak spot

Most clients open your link on their phone first. Google's help pages for the Drive app on Android and on iPhone and iPad describe downloading individual files: tap the three dots next to a file, then Download, or on iPhone send a copy and choose Save image. They don't describe downloading a whole folder in one go. In practice, a client on a phone saves photos one at a time, or has to wait until they're at a computer.

The download quota on busy files

If a link is shared widely (a family group chat, a whole guest list), Google may temporarily stop downloads of a file that is being downloaded very heavily. Google doesn't publish the threshold, and the pause usually lifts by itself. It rarely affects one couple downloading their own photos, but it's worth knowing about for event work. We cover it in detail in "Download quota is exceeded" on Google Drive.

What doesn't happen

Two worries you can put aside. First, your client doesn't need a Google account: when a folder is shared as "Anyone with the link", Google says anyone who has the link can use it "without signing in to their Google Account" (more on that in sharing a Drive folder with someone who doesn't use Google). Second, the photos aren't compressed. Drive gives back the exact files you uploaded, and a ZIP of JPEGs doesn't reduce their quality; see uploading to Drive without losing quality.

How big is a full download?

It helps to know roughly what your client is about to download, because size decides almost everything else: how long it takes, how many ZIPs Drive makes, and whether a phone is realistic at all.

A high-quality JPEG from a modern camera is often somewhere between 5 and 15 MB, depending on the resolution and your export settings. A few rough examples at around 8 MB a photo:

• A portrait session, 60 photos: about 0.5 GB. One ZIP, a quick download.
• A family event, 250 photos: about 2 GB. Right at the point where Drive may start splitting.
• A full wedding, 700 photos: about 5.5 GB. Several ZIPs from Drive, and a long download on any connection.
• Add highlight films: a few minutes of 4K video can be larger than all the photos together.

Your own numbers will differ, so check once: look at the size of the export folder on your computer before you upload it. If it's well over 2 GB, plan for one of the approaches below rather than hoping a single click will do. And if your exports are much bigger than you need, a sensible long-edge size for client delivery (often 3000 to 4000 px for digital use) makes every option faster, while you keep full-resolution files for print orders.

Option 1: send the Drive folder link and let Drive zip it

The simplest route, and it costs nothing. It works well for small and medium shoots, and for clients who will download on a computer.

Set it up

1. In Google Drive, right-click the folder with the final photos and choose Share.
2. Under General access, change "Restricted" to Anyone with the link, and leave the role as Viewer.
3. Check the settings (the gear icon in the Share window) and make sure you haven't turned off the option that lets viewers download. If it's off, your client can look but not save.
4. Click Copy link and send it.

What your client does on a computer

1. Open the link in a browser. No sign-in needed.
2. At the top of the folder, click the Download button (or the three dots next to the folder name, then Download).
3. Wait while Drive prepares the ZIP. For a big folder, this can take a few minutes.
4. Save every ZIP file that appears. For large shoots there will be more than one.
5. Open each ZIP (double-click on most computers) to get the photos.

What happens on iPhone and Android

On a phone, the Drive link opens either in the browser or in the Drive app if it's installed. Either way, saving is usually photo by photo: open a photo, use the menu, and choose Download or Save image. That's fine for a few favourites to post, and tiring for 400 wedding photos. It's worth telling clients up front: "For the full set, download on a computer."

When Option 1 is the right choice

• The shoot is small enough to come down as a single ZIP.
• Your client is comfortable with files and folders.
• You don't need to know whether they've opened or downloaded anything.

If something goes wrong on the client's side (an access request, a link that won't open), our guide to Google Drive links that don't work for clients covers the usual fixes.

Option 2: split the shoot into smaller folders

If the multi-ZIP experience is the problem, you can make it predictable instead of mysterious. Split the delivery into a few clearly named folders inside one parent folder, each comfortably under the size where Drive splits it:

• 01 Getting ready
• 02 Ceremony
• 03 Portraits
• 04 Reception

Share the parent folder as before. Your client can download each part separately, and each one arrives as a single ZIP with a name they recognise. If one download fails, they know exactly which part to redo.

This also makes the delivery easier to browse, and it keeps your own archive tidy. We go deeper into folder naming in how to organise Google Drive for a photography business.

The trade-offs: it's more work for you on every job, it's still several downloads for the client, and it doesn't help at all on phones. It's a good habit, not a full answer.

Option 3: a gallery with a Download all button

The third option keeps your photos exactly where they are, in your Drive folder, and puts a proper client gallery in front of them. This is what we built GalleryLink for, so here is honestly what it does and doesn't do.

How it works

You paste your Drive folder link into GalleryLink, and it becomes a gallery your client can browse on any phone or computer. Subfolders like Ceremony and Reception become sections. Nothing is copied or re-uploaded: when you add photos to the folder, they appear in the gallery.

With Download all switched on, a small download icon sits in the gallery's bottom bar. The client taps it, confirms "Download all files?", and gets:

• One ZIP of the full-size originals, exactly as they are in your Drive.
• A folder per section inside the ZIP, so Ceremony photos stay together.
• Parts for very large galleries: above 400 files, the download comes as Part 1, Part 2 and so on, each a full ZIP, listed in the same confirmation.
• A note if anything is missing: if Google refuses a file at that moment, the ZIP still finishes, and a file called Not included.txt lists which photos to download again later.

Single photos are easier too. In the photo view, the client chooses Download, then Original or a web-size copy, and the file downloads straight away with its real file name, instead of a detour through a Google page.

Turning it on

1. Open the gallery in your dashboard and choose Edit.
2. Make sure Allow downloads is on.
3. Switch on Download all button just below it, and save.

It's off by default, so nothing changes for a gallery until you choose it.

What to know before you rely on it

• It's a beta. It works on real deliveries today, and we're still improving it.
• It's part of Pro, for galleries linked to a Google Drive folder.
• The files still come from your Drive. The gallery fetches each original from your folder as the ZIP is built, so Google's download limits on very busy files can still apply. That's why the Not included.txt note exists.
• Big ZIPs take time. A full wedding is several gigabytes, and the download takes as long as the client's connection needs.
• Your settings still apply. If you turn downloads off, set a password, or close a gallery on a date, the Download all button follows those rules.

Option 4: let clients save the whole gallery to their own Google Drive

Downloading isn't always what a client really wants. Often they just want a safe copy of every photo that doesn't fill their phone. A gallery can offer that directly: on GalleryLink's Studio plan you can turn on Let clients save to Google Drive for a gallery, and clients get a Drive button in it.

One tap, a quick Google sign-in, and every photo is copied at full quality into a new folder in the client's own Google Drive, with a folder for each section. There are no ZIP files to unzip, and nothing is stored on the phone. Clients only give access to the folder that's created, never the rest of their Drive, and your gallery's rules (password, closing date) still apply.

It's the easiest option for clients on a phone, and a real copy: unlike a Drive shortcut, it stays theirs even after your gallery closes. For iPhone clients in particular, see how clients save Google Drive photos on iPhone.

The options side by side

Drive folder link	Smaller folders	Gallery with Download all	Save to client's Google Drive
Whole shoot in one action	One click, but large shoots arrive as several ZIPs	One download per folder	One tap; parts above 400 files	One tap, no ZIPs
On a phone	Mostly photo by photo	Mostly photo by photo	Browse and download in the gallery	Easiest: nothing saved on the phone
Client needs a Google account	No, with "Anyone with the link"	No	No	Yes, to save into their Drive
Size limits to watch	ZIPs split at about 2 GB	Keep each folder small	400 files per ZIP part	Very large videos are skipped
Google download limits	Apply	Apply	Still apply	Still apply
Extra work for you	None	Sorting every job	Paste the link once	Tick one box per gallery
Cost	Free	Free	GalleryLink Pro	GalleryLink Studio

Common problems and quick fixes

These are the messages photographers get most often after a Drive delivery, and what to reply.

"I only got some of the photos"

Almost always a split download: the client opened the first ZIP and didn't notice the second or third. Ask them to look in their Downloads folder for files ending in -2.zip, -3.zip and so on. If one of the ZIPs didn't finish, downloading the folder again, or just the missing section, fixes it.

"It says I need access"

The folder is still set to Restricted, or they were sent a link to a subfolder that isn't shared. Change General access to "Anyone with the link" on the folder you actually sent, then ask them to refresh.

"The ZIP won't open on my phone"

Phones can open ZIP files, but it's fiddly: on an iPhone the file goes to the Files app, where tapping it unpacks it into a folder, and the photos then have to be saved to the photo library from there. For most people it's easier to download the full set on a computer and save favourites on the phone one by one.

"Download quota is exceeded"

A file has been downloaded too many times in a short period, usually because the link went to a big group. It's temporary and per file. Our guide to the quota message explains what to do and how to avoid it next time.

"It's taking forever"

Big sets are big. Suggest a stable Wi-Fi connection rather than mobile data, keep the tab open while Drive prepares the ZIP, and if it keeps failing, download the shoot section by section instead of all at once.

Checklist before you send

Whichever option you choose, five minutes here saves a week of back-and-forth:

• Sharing is "Anyone with the link". Open the link in a private browser window where you're not signed in. If you see an access request, it isn't shared yet.
• Downloads are allowed. Check the Share settings in Drive, and the Allow downloads setting if you use a gallery.
• Only finals are in the folder. No RAW files, rejects or duplicates. They make every ZIP bigger and confuse clients.
• File names make sense. Smith-Wedding-0142.jpg beats DSC_8812.jpg when the client is sorting thousands of files.
• Large shoots are in sections. Subfolders by part of the day help in every option.
• You've tested on a phone. Open the link the way your client will, on a phone, not signed in.
• You've told them about the deadline, if the link won't be up forever.

What to tell your client

A short note with the link prevents most questions. Adapt this to your option:

Hi! Your photos are ready 🤍

Here's your gallery: [link]

You don't need an account. To keep the whole set, use Download all on a computer: you'll get the full-size photos in one ZIP file (very big sets come in a couple of parts). On your phone, open any photo and choose Download to save your favourites.

Please save everything to your own computer or cloud as a backup. Any questions, just reply.

If you're sending a plain Drive link, change the second paragraph to: "Click Download at the top of the folder. Drive will prepare a ZIP file first, and big folders arrive as several ZIPs, so save each one."

The short version

For a small shoot, a well-shared Drive folder is enough. For bigger ones, splitting into named folders makes the ZIPs predictable. And when you want clients to get everything in one tap, on any device, without your files leaving Drive, a gallery with a Download all button does that job. If that sounds like your next delivery, Pro includes it, and you can try the gallery itself free with your own folder.
