Share a Google Drive Folder With No Google Account (2026)

Not every client has a Google account, and the ones who do don't always want to sign in on their mum's iPad to see their wedding photos. The good news is that they don't have to. Google Drive can share a folder so that anyone with the link can open it, with no account and no sign-in. This guide shows how to set that up, what your client can and can't do with it, the privacy trade-offs, and how to make the experience feel less like a file manager.

The setting that makes it work: "Anyone with the link"

Drive folders are private by default. Only people you add by email can open them, and those people need a Google account. To share with someone who doesn't have one, change the folder's general access:

1. In Google Drive, right-click the folder and choose Share.
2. Under General access, change "Restricted" to "Anyone with the link".
3. Set the role to Viewer, so people can see and download but not change, delete or add anything.
4. Click Copy link, then Done.

Google's sharing help confirms that people can then open the files without signing in to a Google account. If they do happen to be signed in, Drive still lets them in. People who aren't signed in simply appear as anonymous visitors.

Share the folder, not each file. Files inside a shared folder inherit its access, so photos you add later are covered automatically.

What your client can do without an account

• Browse the folder in any browser, on a phone or a computer.
• Open photos one at a time in Drive's preview.
• Download single photos, at the full resolution you uploaded.
• Download the whole folder, which Drive packages into zip files.

As the owner you control downloading. In the share settings (the gear icon in the Share window), the option "Viewers and commenters can see the option to download, print, and copy" decides whether viewers get a download button. Leave it on for a delivery. Turning it off suits proofs, although anyone can still take a screenshot.

What trips clients up

Zip downloads arrive in parts. When someone downloads a large folder, Drive splits it into several zip files of about 2 GB each, named like drive-download-...zip, drive-download-...-2.zip and so on. A full wedding easily passes that, so clients who only open the first zip think photos are missing. Tell them to expect several files, or split the delivery into smaller subfolders (preparation, ceremony, portraits, reception).

Phones push the app. On mobile, a Drive link may suggest opening the Google Drive app. Clients without it can usually continue in the browser, but the prompt confuses people who don't use Google.

It looks like a file list. Without an account, clients see what everyone sees: a grid of thumbnails with filenames such as DSC_4821.jpg. It works, but it doesn't present the work the way a gallery does.

Busy links can be paused. If one link reaches a very large group at once, popular files can temporarily stop downloading. Our guide to the "Download quota is exceeded" message explains why and how to avoid it.

For other problems, such as "You need access" or a work account that can't share outside the organisation, see Google Drive links that don't work for clients.

The privacy trade-off

"Anyone with the link" means exactly that. Whoever has the link can open the folder, and anyone they forward it to can too. There's no password on a Drive link, and you can't see who opened it. For most deliveries that's acceptable, because the link is long and random and you only send it to your client. A few precautions are worth taking:

• Share only the delivery folder. Never the parent folder with every client in it, and never your working or RAW folders.
• Keep sensitive sessions tighter. For boudoir, newborn or anything private, use a password. Our guide to password-protecting a Google Drive folder explains the options, since Drive itself doesn't offer one.
• Remove location data from photos taken at a client's home. The free photo location remover does it in your browser.
• Turn sharing off when the job is done, if you don't want the link to work forever. Changing the folder back to Restricted stops the old link immediately.

Sharing with a client who has a Google account

If your client does use Google, you can add their email address under "Add people" instead. Only that account can open the folder, which is more private, but it only works when they open the link signed in to the same account. That's the most common cause of "Request access" screens. For most photographers, "Anyone with the link" plus a password where needed is the simpler, more reliable setup.

A nicer front for the same folder

Everything above keeps working if you put a gallery in front of the folder. With GalleryLink, you paste the shared folder's link and your client gets a gallery: a cover, a full-screen lightbox and a download button on every photo. No account is needed, and no app. The photos stay in your Drive and the gallery updates when the folder changes. On Pro you can also add a password, which a plain Drive link can't have, and let clients mark favourites. Our step-by-step guide to turning a Google Drive folder into a photo gallery shows the whole process.

What to tell your client

A short note with the link prevents most support emails. Something like this works:

"Here are your photos. You don't need a Google account: just open the link. To save one photo, open it and use the download button. To save everything, use Download all, and you may get several zip files, so download and open each one. The link stays live until [date]."

Clients who are less comfortable with technology appreciate the reassurance that they don't need to sign up for anything. If you deliver regularly, keep this as a saved text snippet so every client gets the same clear instructions.

Quick checklist

1. Share the delivery folder only, as Anyone with the link, Viewer.
2. Check the download option is on (or off, for proofs).
3. Open the link in a private browser window to see it as your client will.
4. Tell the client what to expect: several zip files for a big download, or one gallery link if you use a gallery.
