Does Google Drive Reduce Photo Quality? No, Here's Why (2026)
Google Drive keeps every photo exactly as you upload it, while Google Photos' Storage saver shrinks photos over 16 MP. How to upload at full quality, and check it.
Short answer
Google Drive stores the exact file you upload and gives the same file back on download, so it doesn't reduce quality. Google Photos is different: its Storage saver setting resizes photos above 16 MP. Upload finished JPEGs to Drive through the browser or Drive for desktop, and judge sharpness from a downloaded file, not Drive's preview.
Photographers worry about this for good reason: plenty of services quietly shrink photos. Social apps resize them, messaging apps compress them, and Google Photos can store a smaller version if it is set to save space. Google Drive is different. It stores the exact file you upload, byte for byte, and gives the same file back when someone downloads it.
So the quality question with Drive is rarely about Drive itself. It is about which app you used to upload, what you exported in the first place, and whether you are looking at a preview or the real file. This guide walks through each of those.
Google Drive vs Google Photos: the difference that matters
Drive and Google Photos share the same storage, but they treat files differently.
- Google Drive keeps your files as they are. A 24 MB JPEG uploaded to Drive is a 24 MB JPEG when it is downloaded again. RAW files, TIFFs and PSDs are stored as they are too.
- Google Photos has two backup quality settings. In Google's own words, Original quality stores photos "in the same resolution that you took them with no change to their quality". Storage saver stores them "at a slightly reduced quality": photos larger than 16 MP are resized to 16 MP, and videos above 1080p are resized to 1080p.
If your phone backs up to Google Photos in Storage saver, those copies are not your originals. For client work, put the files in Drive, or make sure Photos is set to Original quality. Our comparison of Google Drive and Google Photos for client delivery goes into the other differences, such as albums, sharing and how each looks to a client.
Uploading from a computer
There are two good ways, and neither changes your files.
In the browser. Go to drive.google.com, open the folder, and drag your exported photos in, or use New, then File upload (or Folder upload for a whole folder). This is the simplest way for a single delivery.
With Drive for desktop. Google's desktop app puts Drive in Finder or File Explorer, so you can export from your editing software straight into a Drive folder and let it upload in the background. It suits photographers who deliver often: set your export location to a Drive folder once, and every delivery uploads itself.
Either way, keep the browser tab or app open until the upload finishes. A half-finished upload is the most common cause of "missing" photos, not compression.
Uploading from a phone
In the Google Drive app, tap the plus button, then Upload, and choose the photos. Drive uploads the files the phone gives it. Two things to check:
- iPhone HEIC files. iPhones save photos as HEIC by default. Drive stores them fine, but many Windows computers and older apps can't open HEIC. If clients will receive phone photos, convert them first with the free HEIC to JPG converter, which runs in your browser without uploading anything.
- Location data. Phone photos usually carry the GPS position where they were taken. For sessions at a client's home, remove it before sharing with the photo location remover.
Export settings that keep quality where it matters
Most "quality loss" in a delivery happens at export, before Drive is involved. For client delivery from Lightroom or a similar editor, these settings are a sensible default:
- Format: JPEG. Every device opens it.
- Quality: high (Lightroom's 80 to 100 range). The difference between 90 and 100 is hard to see, and 100 makes noticeably larger files.
- Colour space: sRGB. Wider spaces such as Adobe RGB can look dull or oversaturated in browsers and phones that don't manage colour.
- Size: full resolution for the client's own download, or a long edge around 2048 to 3000 pixels for web and social versions.
- Metadata: keep copyright, consider removing location.

Should you upload RAW files?
Drive will store RAW files without any change, which makes it a reasonable backup destination. For delivery, though, RAW files are rarely what a client wants: they are large, most clients can't open them, and they show the photo before your edit. Deliver edited JPEGs, and keep RAW files in a separate backup folder that is never shared. If storage is the question, our guide to how much storage wedding photography needs works through the numbers.
"It looks blurry in Drive": previews vs the real file
When you open a photo in Drive's preview, you are often looking at a scaled version made for quick viewing, not the full file. A photo can look soft in the preview and be perfectly sharp when downloaded. Before you worry, download the file and open it on your computer at 100%. If the downloaded file is sharp, nothing was lost.
The same is true when clients browse a folder: Drive's grid shows small thumbnails. They get the full file when they download.
Video is different
Drive stores video files exactly as uploaded too, but the way it plays them back is different. After you upload a video, Drive processes it for streaming, and for a while the preview may only play at a lower resolution or not play at all. That is the streaming version, not your file. Downloading it gives the original. If a client says a video "looks soft", ask them to download it rather than watch the preview, or give the processing some time after a large upload.
The same applies to Google Photos: a video backed up in Storage saver above 1080p is resized, while Drive keeps the full original.
Check a delivery before you send it
- Compare the file count in Drive with the count in your export folder.
- Download one photo from Drive and check its size and pixel dimensions match the original.
- Open the share link in a private browser window to see it as your client will.
Once the files are in Drive at full quality, the presentation is the remaining gap: a folder of filenames doesn't show your work the way a gallery does. GalleryLink turns that same Drive folder into a client gallery without uploading anything again, and downloads come straight from your Drive, so clients get the exact files you exported.
