Export From Lightroom Straight to Google Drive (2026 Workflow)

For a lot of photographers, delivery looks like this: export from Lightroom to the desktop, open a browser, drag the files into Google Drive, wait, check, share. It works, but the upload step is pure waiting, and it is where mistakes happen: a folder dragged twice, a batch forgotten, a link sent while half the photos are still uploading.

There is a cleaner way. If Lightroom exports straight into a folder that Google Drive keeps in sync, the upload happens on its own in the background, and every delivery becomes one export. This guide walks through the setup once, so you never have to think about it again: Drive for desktop, a Lightroom Classic export preset, a folder structure that turns into tidy gallery sections, and the checks to do before you send the link.

1. The idea in one sentence

Lightroom exports into a folder; Google Drive for desktop uploads whatever lands in that folder. You stop uploading by hand, and the folder on your computer and the folder in Drive stay the same. Everything else in this guide is detail.

2. Set up Google Drive for desktop

Install Google Drive for desktop and sign in with the account you deliver from. It offers two ways to keep files, and Google's help explains the difference:

	Streaming	Mirroring
Where files live	"Primarily stored in the cloud, but will be made available offline when accessed"	"Always stored on your computer and in the cloud"
Disk space	Very little	A full local copy
On your computer	A virtual Drive	A normal folder
Good for	Laptops and small disks	Keeping a local copy of every delivery

Source: Google Drive Help, Stream and mirror files with Drive for desktop. Google also notes that files in shared drives can only be streamed.

Either works for delivery. Mirroring has one practical advantage: your exports exist as normal files on your disk, which also makes them part of your local backup. Our backup workflow explains why a second copy matters, and the complete Google Drive guide for photographers covers storage plans.

3. A folder structure that builds the gallery for you

Decide the structure once and reuse it for every job. Numbering keeps parts of the day in order, and naming the job folder by date and client keeps your Drive sorted without effort:

My Drive/
  Clients/
    2026-10 Smith Wedding/
      01 Preparation/
      02 Ceremony/
      03 Portraits/
      04 Reception/

This matters beyond tidiness. Clients browse in the order the day happened, and a gallery that reads the folder can turn each subfolder into a named section automatically (more on that in section 9). If you work with a second shooter, agree these names in advance; our second shooter workflow shows how both sets land in the same folders.

4. The Lightroom Classic export preset

Select the photos to deliver, open the Export dialog, and work down the panels. These are our recommended settings for a full-resolution client delivery; adjust them to your style.

Panel	Setting	Why
Export Location	Export To: Specific Folder, choosing the job folder inside your Drive	This is what makes the upload automatic
Export Location	Put in Subfolder, named for the part of the day (for example "02 Ceremony")	One export per part of the day builds the sections
Export Location	Existing Files: Choose a new name for the exported file	Re-exporting never silently overwrites a delivered photo
File Naming	Rename To a pattern with the client name and a sequence number	Clients see meaningful names instead of camera file names
File Settings	Image Format: JPEG, Color Space: sRGB, high Quality	Opens correctly on every phone, browser and print lab
Image Sizing	Leave Resize to Fit off for the main delivery	Clients get full resolution for prints
Output Sharpening	Sharpen For: Screen, Amount: Standard	A common default for photos viewed on screens
Metadata	Copyright & Contact Info Only	Your name travels with the file; camera details and location do not
Watermark	Off for final delivery	Paying clients expect clean files

A few notes on the choices. Adobe's own built-in preset for full-size JPEGs exports them converted to and tagged as sRGB at maximum quality, which is a safe starting point. Adobe's Lightroom evangelist Julieanne Kost recommends Copyright & Contact Info Only for client files, and her guide is the best walk-through of every panel. On watermarks, our watermarking guide covers when they help and when they only annoy clients.

Save it as a preset. Click Add at the bottom of the preset list and name it something like "Client delivery to Drive". Kost also points out that the Export Location can be set to Choose Folder Later, which is useful in a preset: you keep all the settings and pick the job folder at export time.

5. A second preset for web and social

Many clients want two versions: full resolution for prints, and something lighter to post and send. Make a second preset with the same settings, except:

• Image Sizing: Resize to Fit by Long Edge, so portrait and landscape photos are sized the same way, with Don't Enlarge ticked.
• Put in Subfolder: something like "Web size".

Lightroom Classic can run several presets in one go (Kost's guide covers batch exporting), so one click can produce both sets in the same Drive folder.

6. Check the upload finished before you send

The one risk of an automatic upload is sending the link before it has finished. A two-minute check prevents that:

1. Wait until Drive for desktop has finished uploading.
2. Open the job folder on drive.google.com in a browser.
3. Check the number of files in each subfolder matches what Lightroom exported.
4. Open one photo from each subfolder at full size.

If a count is short, wait a few minutes and refresh before you send anything. Clients who open a half-uploaded gallery often assume photos are missing.

7. Share it correctly

Share the job folder, not individual files: right-click it, choose Share, and set General access to Anyone with the link with the Viewer role. Google's help confirms that anyone with the link can then open it without signing in to a Google Account. Subfolders follow the setting of the folder you share.

Then open the link in a private window on your phone before sending it. If anything looks wrong, our guide to Google Drive links that don't work for clients covers the eight most common problems and their fixes.

8. Lightroom (cloud) and mobile

If you edit in Lightroom (the cloud-based version) or on a phone, the principle is the same even though the dialogs differ: export to a folder that Drive keeps in sync on that device, or export to the device and upload into the job folder in the Drive app. Keep the same folder structure, so a delivery looks identical whichever app it came from.

9. From folder to gallery

At this point you have a tidy, shared Drive folder, and you could send that link as it is. If you would rather your client opened a proper gallery than a list of files, a gallery tool that reads Google Drive can present the same folder without you uploading anything again.

On GalleryLink, you paste the job folder's link and choose a look. The numbered subfolders become named sections, clients can view full-size photos and download each one, and the gallery stays in sync with the folder: when you export another batch from Lightroom, it appears in the gallery once Drive has uploaded it. The folder still needs to be shared as "Anyone with the link", and the photos still come from your Drive.

10. The whole workflow as a checklist

1. Once: install Drive for desktop, choose streaming or mirroring, and create a Clients folder.
2. Once: build the "Client delivery to Drive" preset, plus a "Web size" preset if you offer one.
3. Per job: create the job folder (date and client name).
4. Per job: export each part of the day with Put in Subfolder ("01 Preparation", "02 Ceremony"…).
5. Per job: wait for Drive to finish, then check the file counts on drive.google.com.
6. Per job: share the job folder as "Anyone with the link" and test it in a private window on your phone.
7. Per job: send the link, or turn it into a gallery first.

Set it up once and every delivery after that is an export and a link. If you would like to see what a Drive folder looks like as a gallery, you can try it with our sample folder in about a minute.
