How to Share Wedding Photos With Guests: Every Method Compared
Group chats, forwarded Drive links, one shared password, or client-made mini-galleries — what each method does to your images, your credit, and the couple's privacy, plus a two-minute setup that markets you.
Short answer
Give guests a link rather than letting the photos spread as screenshots, because messaging apps recompress images heavily and strip your credit in the process. The setup that works is a password protected gallery for the couple plus client made mini galleries they can send to family, so the photos travel at full quality with your name attached.
The couple has the gallery. Within a day, so does everyone else — or at least, everyone else wants it. Parents ask for "just the family ones", the bridal party wants the getting-ready set, a grandmother who has never downloaded a file in her life wants the ceremony, and somewhere a group chat is passing around six screenshots of your work at one-tenth resolution. How you handle this moment decides whether two hundred guests see your photography the way you delivered it, or the way a messaging app recompressed it.
This is a practical comparison of every common way wedding photos reach guests, what each one does to your images and your workload, and how to set up the handoff so it markets you instead of erasing you.

Why guest sharing is a marketing channel, not a chore
Wedding guests are the single warmest audience your business will ever have. They just watched you work for ten hours, they're mostly the same age and life stage as the couple, and some of them are engaged right now. Photography-business advice from the PPA to every podcast agrees on where bookings come from: referral and word of mouth beat every ad channel. A guest opening a beautiful, credited gallery page is that referral happening.
Which is why the default outcome — screenshots in a group chat — is such a quiet loss. The work spreads, but compressed, uncredited, and unattributable. The goal of a guest-sharing setup is simple: the photos travel, and your name travels with them.
Every method, compared
Screenshots and group chats
The zero-effort default. WhatsApp and iMessage recompress aggressively — WhatsApp caps image dimensions and applies heavy JPEG compression, so a 24-megapixel frame arrives as something under a megabyte with visible artifacts. No credit, no link back, no way for an engaged guest to find you. You can't prevent this method, but you can make the better path easier than the screenshot.
Shared Drive or Dropbox folders
Some photographers hand the couple a shareable Drive link and let them forward it. Full resolution survives, but guests land in a file manager: DSC filenames, no cover, no lightbox, no photographer's name anywhere — and, more dangerously, that link often points at the entire delivery, including frames the couple might not want their colleagues browsing. Once forwarded, it can't be un-forwarded.
Facebook albums and Instagram
Fine as promotion you run yourself; poor as the primary guest channel. Compression is heavy, order is lost, tags decay, and the couple's more private frames don't belong there. Treat social as the trailer, with the gallery as the film.
Giving everyone the gallery password
Simple, and sometimes right — for a small wedding where the couple is happy for every guest to see everything. The password travels by word of mouth ("firstnames2026"), guests get the full experience, and your branding is on every page. The cost is control: there's one audience, and it's everyone. The couple can't give the in-laws a different view than the office group chat, and if downloads are on, they're on for all two hundred people.
Client-made mini-galleries: the middle path
The option most photographers don't know exists: let the couple build the guest sets. In GalleryLink, clients viewing their gallery can tap Select, pick any photos, and mint a link that contains only those — a real gallery page, same theme, your studio credited at the bottom, with its own view count. The rest of the delivery stays theirs; guests get no password and no route into the full set.
This maps exactly onto how couples actually share: one set for her family, another for his, twelve frames for colleagues. Each audience gets a link that feels made for them, every page carries your name and links to your studio page, and nobody ever holds more than the couple chose to give them. The couple can even see which link got opened most — the family competition writes itself.
The comparison table
| Method | Image quality | Your credit travels | Couple controls scope | Effort for you |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Group-chat screenshots | Poor | No | No | None |
| Forwarded Drive/Dropbox link | Full | No | No — all or nothing | None |
| Social media albums | Compressed | Sometimes | Partly | Ongoing |
| Shared gallery password | Full | Yes | No — one audience | None |
| Client-made mini-galleries | Full | Yes, every page | Yes, per audience | None — the couple does it |
Capturing guests at the venue with a QR card
The best moment to point two hundred people at the gallery is while they're still in the room. A printed card by the guest book — "Scan for the photos" — outperforms any follow-up email, because the emotional peak is now, not in six weeks.
GalleryLink generates print-ready QR cards and posters for any gallery: your studio name, the couple's names, and a code that opens the gallery link. Pair it with a password the couple is happy to display, or point it at a mini-gallery made for exactly this purpose — the ceremony highlights, say, rather than the full delivery.
The reverse direction: collecting guests' photos
Sharing runs both ways. Guests hold hundreds of frames you couldn't shoot — the getting-ready selfies, the table shots, the moment you were pointed the other way. On Pro, the same gallery link accepts guest uploads: anyone at the event can add their phone photos and videos, no app, no account, and a live slideshow on the venue screen picks each one up as it arrives. Guest files are stored by GalleryLink, never mixed into your originals — the wall is theirs, the delivery stays yours.
A recommended setup, step by step
- Deliver the gallery password-protected, with the password being something the couple can say out loud. Their inner circle gets the full experience. (How passwords work here.)
- Leave client sharing on — it's the default — and tell the couple, in your delivery email, one sentence: "Tap Select to send any set of photos to family as its own link." That sentence replaces every "can you send Aunt Carol the family photos?" email you'd otherwise get.
- Put a QR card at the reception pointing at whichever view you and the couple agreed guests should see.
- Switch on guest uploads if you want the phones' side of the day collected in one place instead of scattered across group chats.
- Keep downloads on for the couple, decide deliberately for guests. Mini-gallery links have their own download toggle, so full-resolution files go where the couple wants them and nowhere else.
Total setup time is about two minutes, and every path a photo can now take carries your name to the people most likely to book you next. That's the whole trick: make the beautiful, credited route the easiest one in the room.
Common questions
Do guests need an account for any of this? No — not to view, not to download, not to upload their own photos. Any link opens in any browser, which for a guest list spanning ages 8 to 88 is the difference between working and not.
What if the couple shares more than they meant to? Mini-gallery links can be revoked by the couple at any time, and revocation is instant — the token simply stops resolving. The full gallery password can be changed in your dashboard without changing the gallery link.
Does this work for galleries I upload directly, not just Drive-linked ones? Yes — since hosted galleries arrived, every sharing feature works identically for both kinds. Guests can't tell the difference either.
Where do I start? The wedding photographers guide covers the full delivery workflow; sharing is the last two minutes of it. Or just open your latest gallery and try Select yourself — you can make a test link and revoke it after.
